The Next Generation of Gaming
With the launch of the PlayStation 5 finally here, I take a quick dive into Astro’s Playroom to get a feel for what we can look forward to with this new hardware.
I have to admit, for what I considered to be more of a “tech demo” there is a lot more here in the free Astro’s Playroom than expected. At the beginning, the game introduces us to the new DualSense controller of the PlayStation 5, which is an absolute joy. Having started out gaming with the NES, I had grown quite accustomed to the traditional PlayStation controller, which left me a bit skeptical about a new form factor. Needless to say, I believe these new controllers will introduce a whole new level of immersion into our gaming experience. Everything from the haptic feedback to the new adaptive triggers feels great, I am however concerned about how the implementation of adaptive triggers will effect the durability of these new controllers, but only time will tell on that front.

The graphics, as expected, look gorgeous on the PS5. Load times were quick, and I experienced no issues with frame rate. Lets be honest here, Astro’s Playroom is not the most demanding of titles, but we can still get a feel here of what is in store for the future.

As for Astro’s Playroom itself, the game definitely has a charming feel. It’s worth a play through when you are looking for a more casual game to play. There’s just something calming about playing a casual platformer, and seeing as how this comes as a free download (at the time of writing) we can’t really complain. Explore to your hearts content, and if you find yourself enjoying whats here you may consider giving Astro Bot: Rescue Mission a try (if you have PlayStation VR).
